Dharma Secret’s LOST-n-Found: A Blog Dedicated to the T.V. Show Lost

Theory: EM Field Theory 4.0

When I first watched Live Together, Die Alone, I could not believe that an EM field actually played as big a role in the show as it did. Up until that point, everything in my theories were just speculation, but I have to say it again… HOLY CRAP! Anyway, If you haven’t read my previous versions, and you would like to see how this theory has progressed, and believe me, it has a lot, then you can find them here:
Version 1.0
Version 2.0
Version 3.0

The Six Stations: The first thing that popped into my head the first time that I saw the blast door map was that it appears that all the hatches are a part of one big facility. It was then that the thought occurred to me that, “What if Station 3 does not just refer to the Swan hatch, but to the entire island facility as a whole?” If this were so, then each of the hatches would serve a different function of the Station 3 facility.

C1 = Possible base of operations for the “Cerberus System”.
Arrow Hatch = Storage Facility?
C3 = Possible location for Meteorological Research, Listening station, Cryptography analysis or all of the above?
C4 = Possible underwater hatch, Zoological research facility?
Swan Hatch = Data Entry?
Flame Hatch = Unknown
Staff Hatch = Medical Facility

Based on this idea, then there could be similarly designed facilities monitoring separate anomalies all over the world. Although this would be incredibly expensive to maintain, multiple facilities would make sense. Why have only one facility working on something when you could have multiple facilities working to solve a problem.

The various facilities could also be a system of “Sleeper Cells”. If and when one facility goes down, then the next station activates, and work is resumed there. Basically, why put all of your eggs into one basket? This, however, would imply that there were previous incidents, which caused the demise of Stations 1 and 2. One thing that could point to this is that on the map, one of the notes states that the “Incident” happened in 1985. However, we first find out about the “Incident” from the Hanso orientation film, which, according to the copyright at the end of the film, was produced in 1980.

Picture of a note on the map that states that the “Incident” happened in 1985.

Screen capture of the copyright date at the end of the Hanso Orientation film.

Although it is entirely possible that the map could be wrong, the only way that they could have mentioned the “Incident” in the Hanso film is if there was an incident prior to the films creation in 1980. The first incident could have brought about the demise of Station 1, forcing the activation of Station 2. A second incident then caused Station 2 to be abandoned, and work was moved to Station 3. Then a third incident occurred at Station 3, and work was moved to the next facility. It is possible that Stations 1 and 2 could still be operational to a certain extent, similar to the way that Station 3 is, but the main reason for moving operations from station to station is so that the bulk of the research is always conducted at a fully operational facility.

The Incident: During their time on the island, the Others (Which are made up of Hanso personnel stationed on the island, and miscellaneous castaways) found that the Dharma Initiative discovered that the Earth’s current electromagnetic (EM) field has been slowly degrading, and unless a way can be found to stop it, the magnetosphere, which prevents sun’s deadly radiation from reaching the earth, will eventually fail as well.

Under normal conditions, the EM field starts near the south pole of the Earth (negative), curve around in space and converge again near the north pole (Positive).

The Earth’s magnetosphere, currents also flow through space and modify this pattern: on the side facing the Sun, field lines are compressed earthward, while on the night side they are pulled out into a very long “tail”, like that of a comet.

The solar wind travels past the Earth at well over 1,000,000 miles per hour. It is the Earth’s magnetic field that deflects the solar wind around the Earth so that most of it does not hit our atmosphere head on.

The Dharma Initiative found that there were certain places around the globe, such as the magnetic anomaly on the island, which have a polarity counter to that of the rest of the planet. Put simply, South would be positive and North would be negative. If enough anomalies occurred around the globe, or if one anomaly got strong enough, it would cause the magnetosphere to collapse, and as such allow deadly electromagnetic radiation from the sun to enter the atmosphere and literally burn the planet to a crisp. (The best possible explanation of this that I can recommend is for you to watch the movie “The Core”)

Notice the similarity between the above picture, and the image (titled “Fallout”) found in the footer of the DJ Dan site.

Notice how the tail is not straight. If this is a diagram of the Earth’s EM field, then what could cause it to bend like that? If an EM anomaly were to disrupt the current EM field, then it is possible that it could also distort the magnetosphere tail as depicted in the “Fallout” diagram.

The focus of Station 3 (the “Swan Hatch” found by the survivors of Flight 815) was both to study the strange magnetic phenomenon on the island, as well as to find a way to prevent the failure of the EM field. It was the hope of the Dharma Initiative that they could some how find a way to seal up the magnetic anomaly thus preventing it from getting any bigger. It was this effort, which possibly caused the first incident. In an attempt to close the anomaly on the island, something cataclysmic happened and instead of closing the anomaly, the Dharma Initiative in fact made it stronger. At this point, the best that they were able to do was to contain the now potentially earth-ending anomaly.

Based on my interpretation of the map, the “Incident” which brought about the demise of Station 3 started in the C1 hatch, and spread to the central facility. Unfortunately, this hatch was destroyed in the “Incident” which is why it was scratched out on the map. In order prevent the “Incident” from spreading to the other hatches; the entire facility was put into lockdown. Once it was contained, the lockdown was disengaged. However, damage to the C1 hatch and the central facility rendered them unsafe. After the “Incident”, the corridors leading to the central facility were sealed off, as indicated on the map by the “X”s over the corridors, and the area quarantined.

Work originally conducted at Station 3 was moved to another facility, and the majority of Dharma Initiative resources that remained on the island were moved to a hatch, possible C3, to the north (which is the facility currently occupied by the Others).

The Dharma Initiative found that it would be impossible to completely contain the anomaly, so they devised a means in which they could vent a safe amount of EM energy into the atmosphere. They then set up the computer system in the Swan hatch, as described in the season two finale “Live Together, Die Alone”, with directions for the inhabitants to enter the numbers every 108 minutes, and as such vent the EM energy. If the built up energy is not vented, then the energy will build up to a point where the current safety measures used to contain the anomaly will fail, and the full force of the anomaly will escape, greatly affecting the Earth’s EM field, and the Magnetosphere.

The Creation of the Map: As explained by Kelvin in “Live Together, Die Alone” he and his former partner “Radzinski” drew the map. However, I believe that the map was first started during the “Incident”. When the incident occurred, the hatch when into lockdown as a safety precaution. The hatch remained in lockdown while the Dharma Initiative tried to find out what happened, and bring what ever it was under control. Who knows how long they would have been in there? It is quite possible that the hatch remained in lockdown for several hours, maybe even days depending on the severity of the Incident. Completely cut off from the rest of the facility, as well as having no means of communication with the Dharma Initiative, those trapped in the hatch could only assume the worse. It was then that the people trapped in the hatch started the map (basic layout of the facility, conduits, and geography of the island, etc.) on the blast door as a means to try and figure a way out. After the Dharma Initiative got the Incident under control, the hatches were taken out of lockdown. As a means of not panicking the workers, information about the severity of the Incident was downplayed or even suppressed by the Dharma Initiative. However, the workers were able to find out tidbits of information about what happened, and added notes whenever they acquired new information, (like the destruction of the C1 hatch, which is why I believe it was scratched out) to the map. Throughout the years, different people found the map, and added other notes, which explains the different handwriting, and the mix of speculatory and factual notes.

The Bright Light: At the end of “Live together, Die Alone”, the inhabitants of the island were able to see a huge bright light, which was a result of the numbers not being imputed.

Based on my EM field theory, I believe that EM build up on the island interfered with the earth’s EM field, and opened up a hole in the magnetosphere, igniting the plasma in Ionosphere (which is created when ultra-violet rays ionize the upper atmosphere creating the electrically-conducting part of magnetosphere) and allowing solar radiation from the sun into the atmosphere above the island. When Desmond turned the key on the failsafe system, the hole immediately closed. It is possible that had Desmond not triggered the failsafe that the hole would have continued to grow until the entire magnetosphere failed, and bringing about the end of the world.

The Sickness Version 2: At the moment, the only mention of the sickness was made by Rousseau, and then later it was alluded to by Ethan in Maternity Leave. The strange thing is that it has yet to manifest in any of the survivors. The first inclination of any sort of sickness among the survivors was when Claire’s baby got sick. However, by the end of the episode, whatever the baby had cleared up, and nothing conclusive was revealed about the sickness that Rousseau is so freaked out about. It is obvious that since Ethan mentioned it to Claire, and that the Dharma Initiative has a vaccine (if that is what is in the vials) for it, then the sickness must be real. Still, it is strange that after living on the island for over two months that none of the survivors have contracted it while Rousseau’s crew got it after living on the island for about the same amount of time.

One could assume that the same bright light that was seen at the end “Live Together, Die Alone”, also occurred during the incident. If the bright light were in fact the result of a hole opening up in the magnetosphere, then a great deal of solar radiation would have bombarded the island, infecting the inhabitants, and causing the “Sickness”. Based on the black light map, the incident occurred in 1985. Sayid said that Rousseau’s message had been transmitting for 16 years, and we know that the crash was in Sept. 2004. Given the information, Rousseau and her team landed on the island in 1988, and are well within the timeline of the show. The reason that none of the survivors have manifested any signs of being sick is because the residual radiation from the “Incident” dissipated before they crashed, where as, Rousseau and her team, who were shipwrecked approximately 16 years before Flight 815 were exposed to the radiation brought on by the”“Incident”.

At this point, it doesn’t appear that anyone on the island has been infected with the sickness. However, it would be interesting to see if the Survivors and Others suddenly started getting sick next season because of what happened at the end of “Live Together, Die Alone”. This however does not fully explain the existence of the vaccine and why it is so important to take it if the radiation from the Incident has already dissipated, or why it was included in the supply drop.

In a previous version of this theory, I theorized that the sickness is not a virus, or a pathogen, but is a side effect to prolonged exposure to the electromagnetic anomalies on the island upon the brain. If the sickness is related to the anomaly’s prolonged effect on the brain, then I believe that the sickness may have first manifested among the Dharma Initiative’s remote viewers. The sudden explosion of EM energy no doubt had a profound effect on the brains of the remote viewers. There are notes on the black light map referring to a sickness, “Aegrescit Medendo” which translates to “the disease worsens with treatment. The remedy is worse than the disease”. Indicating that it took the Dharma Initiative a lot of trial and error to find a vaccine.

A normal person would usually not be vulnerable to this phenomenon. However, due to their heightened brain activity, those with some sort of psychic ability (no matter how undeveloped) are. If untreated, the electromagnetism on the island will elevate activity in the brain to the point where it would cause them to go insane. If my theory is correct, and the children were taken for their psychic abilities, then one of the main reasons that they are taken is that they have to be injected with the vaccine to prevent them from succumbing to the sickness. Children, with their still developing bodies may also be particularly susceptible to the sickness which would explain why the Others are so adamant about getting Claire’s baby, and why Ethan was injecting her with the vaccine in Maternity Leave.

We find out in “Three Minutes” that the vaccine must be taken once every nine days. It would make sense if it were needed to be taken regularly. This way, the DHARMA INITIATIVE would have a way of controlling their remote viewers. As long as they are the only source of the vaccine on the island, then the Remote Viewers have no choice but to work for them. It is also possible that Desmond or anyone else with latent psychic abilities must take it because of their proximity to electromagnetic anomaly in the hatch. When Kelvin found Desmond, he quickly realized that he might have had an innate psychic ability, so he gave Desmond the vaccine to prevent him from going mad.

The Others: The way that the Others are portrayed on the show, we are led to believe that they are the antagonists in the story. However, Henry’s comment to Jack that they were the “good guys” got me thinking. According to the Orientation films, the Hanso foundation and the Dharma Initiative were started with the intention of somehow benefiting humanity. Now, with the advent of the LOST Experience ARG, we find out that the Hanso Foundation is actually an unscrupulous organization that has no qualms “usurping authority” to advance their own gains. Although it is possible that the orientation films are just propaganda made with the intention of upholding the Hanso foundation’s public image. I have, instead, come to the conclusion that nefarious elements within the Hanso Foundation have altered the foundation’s original mission to benefit humanity.

In my Bad Twin Theory I speculated that Gary Troup’s novel, “Bad Twin”, was an allegory about the power struggle for control of the Hanso Foundation between twin brothers Alvar and Magnus Hanso. I further theorized that it was Alvar, not Magnus who died and was laid to rest near the Black Rock.

Magnus then assumed his brother’s identity, and is now running the Hanso Foundation behind the veil of his Board of Directors. If Magnus is the “Bad Twin”, then once he had gained control of the Hanso Foundation, and the Dharma Initiative, Magnus started to pervert his brother’s noble endeavors, and used the foundation’s resources to further his personal gains.

It was mentioned in DJ Dan’s second podcast that there are individuals currently working on EM weapons and that there is a possible connection to the Hanso Foundation. Based on this, we can assume that perhaps, Magnus and the Hanso Foundation may be trying to develop a weapon using the knowledge acquired during research on the island. Magus probably saw first hand the destructive potential of using EM fields when Station 3 was almost completely destroyed during the “Incident”. It is because of projects like this that the Others, who are made up of idealistic individuals, and former employees who believed in Alvar’s original message of working to benefit humanity, took it upon themselves to reveal the foundation’s evil deeds, and to somehow unseat Magnus from his position of power, using whatever means possible.

The revelation of Magnus Hanso’s true identity, although fictionalized by Troup, could cause a rift within the organization, and bring about the downfall of Magnus, the Hanso Foundation, and the Dharma Initiative. If taken to the ultimate extreme, then one could assume that if the Dharma Initiative staged the crash of flight 815, then it may have been done in an attempt to prevent Gary Troup from publishing his book. Unfortunately for the Initiative, Gary Troup had sent his manuscript to his publisher before meeting his fate on flight 815.

This brings me to probably the most outlandish piece of speculation in this theory. Based on my theory that the others are not antagonists, and that their true intentions are not to help but to bring down the nefarious elements within the Hanso Foundation, it is my belief that Persephone is in fact, an Other. Please note that when I say that Persephone is an Other that I don’t meant that she is running around the island with Zeke and Henry, but that she is a part of an organization of people who are currently trying to undermine the Hanso Foundation.

This sounds like a good theory and is further supported by how on the Persephone.hanso site one of the translations was “a mouse does not rely on just one hole”

I was just rechecking that final scene in Portuguese, everything still sounds the same.

    BUT

I have no idea if anyone has posted it somewhere else yet, but the guys in the snow are listening to an instrumental version of “Make Your Own Kind of Music”! It’s barely recognizable, and they speak over it, but it’s the song, indeed.

Your theory is amazingly comprehensive and grounded equally in the show’s mythology along with hard science. Which we have always been promised the show would adhere to. What boggles my mind is just how they go about dramatizing the reveal of an explanation so dependent on the general audience’s ability to process higher-level scientific information. Perhaps this is when the writers would haul out “the Joop explains all” doomsday senario they have alledgedly installed in case of cancellation? How much would you pay to see a talking ape detail the finer points of the physics behind electromagnetism? Take that Dr. Marvin Candle.
