Dharma Secret’s LOST-n-Found: A Blog Dedicated to the T.V. Show Lost

Theory: EM Field Theory 3.0

Well, here it is, EM Field Theory 3.0. If you haven’t read my previous versions, then you can find them here:
Version 1.0
Version 2.0

I had thought about holding off until the end of the season, but with four episodes remaining before the season finale, I figured why not post it so that I could get some feed back before the end of the season. Aside from that, I wanted to get some predictions out there, and may be I’ll get lucky (Probably not). As always, I reserve the right to alter my theory as information through new episodes becomes available.

The Crash Version 2.0: According to the documentary Designing a Disaster which is on the season one box set, the plane used in the filming of Lost is an L-1011, The L-1011 requires three crewmen, the captain, the co-pilot and the flight engineer, each of which is capable of flying the plane at anytime. When Jack and Kate first enter the cockpit in part one of the pilot, notice that there are three seats in the cockpit. When they open the door a body falls out of the cockpit, yet when they enter, only the pilot is in the cockpit. There should have been two bodies in the cockpit with the pilot. It could be argued that the co-pilot or the engineer could have been in the cabin, but in the event of a catastrophe (Like oh say the plane crashing) the entire flight crew would be in the cockpit.

Shortly after take off, either the co-pilot or the engineer (for the purpose of making it easier, lets say the co-pilot who was actually working for the DI) activated a program that released a knock out gas into the plain, rendering everyone unconscious. The co-pilot, then took control of the plane, and redirected the plane to the island. Once over the island, the co-pilot put the plan into an approach pattern and let the DI do whatever it was that they did to bring down the plane. Notice the lack ground scarring which would be the result of a large object falling from the sky. The co-pilot then left the plane and made his way to a DI facility somewhere on the island.

Henry Gale and the Lockdown : Since it is apparent that Ethan and Goodwin both failed at their objectives, the Others used their knowledge of the balloon and it’s location to fabricate a story so that Henry could infiltrate the camp. It was further hinted in Maternity Leave that Henry was an Other when he started to plant the seeds of dissention between Locke and Jack. Then at the end of Maternity Leave, Eko asked to speak to Henry where he asked for his forgiveness for killing two Others in The Other 48 Days when they tried to take him his first night on the island. I believe that Eko thinks that Henry was an Other. As such, the only person whom he can ask for forgiveness for killing the two Others, is another Other.

Just like Charley stated in Dave, I believe that the lockdown corresponds with the supply drop. Every time there is a supply drop, the hatches go into lockdown so that the people in the hatch can’t go outside. Maybe this is to prevent the people in the hatch from seeing where the drop is coming from (i.e. the direction the plane is coming from, or even if it is a plane that delivers it), or it could be a safety feature to prevent people from going out side and getting killed from the supply drop falling on top of them. After the supplies were safely on the ground, the all clear was given and the blast doors opened up.

I don’t believe that the Others orchestrated the lockdown, but I do think that they knew about it, and used it to their advantage. They knew that a supply drop/lockdown would be happening soon, so they sent Henry to the Lost Camp knowing that he would be captured and taken to the hatch. Once Henry was in the hatch, he just waited for the lockdown, and attempted to use it as a way to get Locke, and possibly Jack, to trust him thus allowing him to infiltrate the camp. It is likely that, combined with Michael’s possible defection, this could also explain the lack of Smoke/Monster sightings, and whispers in the jungle. As long as they are preoccupied with Henry and the truce is in place, the Others know that the survivors will not be actively trying to interfere with their various endeavors. What Henry didn’t count on, however, was Sayid digging up the grave and finding the real Henry Gale. Jack will no doubt try to trade Henry for Walt, only to see Henry killed for his failure to infiltrate the Lost camp.

The Others and the Dharma Initiative: During their time on the island, the Others (Which are made up of Hanso personnel stationed on the island, and miscellaneous castaways) found that the DI has discovered that the Earth’s current electromagnetic (EM) field has been slowly degrading, and unless a way can be found to stop it, the magnetosphere, which prevents sun’s deadly radiation from reaching the earth, will eventually fail as well. The focus of Station 3 (the “Swan Hatch” found by the survivors of Flight 815) was both to study the strange magnetic phenomenon on the island, as well as to find a way to prevent the failure of the EM field. Eventually, the scientists at Station three devised a temporary solution. However, it only slows the degradation of the EM field.

The DI established a network of satellites in orbit, which are commanded by a main satellite. These satellites help to maintain the EM field as well as monitor its status. At the end of every cycle, information that has been gathered by the network is sent to the main satellite. Every 108 minutes, which is how long it takes for a satellite to circle the earth, the code must be entered which allows the main satellite to connect with computers on the island and download data on the current state of the EM field. There is a 5-minute window in which the satellite is in position to make the uplink. An alarm in the hatch begins sound when the satellite first comes into position. In the event that an uplink is not able to be made, then the network continues to function based on information from the previous cycle, however, since there was no download, all data accumulated by the network is lost. If Henry was telling the truth about what happened with the count down in Dave then this would explain why nothing happened. The satellites just resumed operations based on information from the previous 108-minute cycle.

As a back up, so that the vital information is not lost, a program automatically engages that cause bunker doors (The sounds heard when Lock failed to enter the code on time in One of Them) on the surface to open so that an antenna can be raised which gives the technician one more minute to make the uplink. If the uplink is made before the antenna is raised into position, then the program automatically disengages.

Based on the information from the network, the computers keep a log on the current state of the EM field as well as calculate is any adjustments need to be taken by the network (This process may take several minutes so the commands sent up to the main satellite are based on the information the computer received during the previous 108 minute cycle). This information is then sent back to the main satellite so that it can direct the other satellites in the network to continue operating as usual or to alter their current functions (i.e. orbit or whatever other functions that are necessary).

If the DI is in fact using multiple facilities, then the use of a satellite or satellite network could be a way of synchronizing all information between the different stations.

The Incident and the Creation of the Map: It is obvious that more than one person contributed to the creation of the map. I believe that the map was first started during the “Incident”. When the incident occurred, the hatch when into lockdown as a safety precaution. The hatch remained in lockdown while the DI tried to find out what happened, and bring what ever it was under control. Who knows how long they would have been in there? It is quite possible that the hatch remained in lockdown for several hours, maybe even days depending on the severity of the Incident.

Completely cut off from the rest of the facility, as well as having no means of communication with the DI, those trapped in the hatch could only assume the worse. It was then that the people trapped in the hatch started the map (basic layout of the facility, conduits, and geography of the island) on the blast door as a means to try and figure a way out. After the DI got the Incident under control, the hatches were taken out of lockdown. As a means of not panicking the workers, information about the severity of the Incident was downplayed or even suppressed by the DI. However, the workers were able to find out tidbits of information about what happened. Whenever they acquired new information, they waited until there was another lockdown, and added notes (like the destruction of the C1 hatch, which is why I believe it was scratched out) to the map. Throughout the years, different people found the map, and added other notes, which explains the different handwriting, and the mix of speculatory and factual notes. I believe that the Latin ramblings, which seem to not make sense, were added to the map last by someone who was obviously distraught and a little eccentric (Desmond?).

The first thing that popped into my head the first time that I saw the map was that it appears that all the hatches are a part of one big facility. What if “Station 3” does not just refer to the Swan hatch, but to the entire island facility as a whole? If this were so, then each of the hatches would serve a different function of the Station 3 facility.

C1 = Possible base of operations for the “Cerberus System”.
Arrow Hatch = Storage Facility?
C3 = Possible location for Meteorological Research, Listening station, Cryptography analysis or all of the above?
C4 (The Pearl?) = Possible underwater hatch, Zoological research facility?
Swan Hatch = Data Entry?
Flame Hatch = Unknown
Staff Hatch = Medical Facility

There could be similarly designed facilities located all over the world. Although this would be incredibly expensive to maintain, multiple facilities would make sense. Why have only one facility working on something when you could have multiple facilities working to solve a problem. They could also be a system of “Sleeper Cells”. If and when one facility goes down, then the next station activates, and work is resumed there. Basically, why put all of your eggs into one basket? This, however, would imply that there were previous incidents with caused the demise of Stations 1 and 2.

One thing that could point to this is that on the map, one of the notes states that the “Incident” happened in 1985. However, we first find out about the “Incident” from the Hanso orientation film, which, according to the copyright at the end of the film, was produced in 1980.

Picture of a note on the map that states that the “Incident” happened in 1985.

Screen capture of the copyright date at the end of the Hanso Orientation film.

Although it is entirely possible that the map could be wrong, the only way that they could have mentioned the “Incident” in the Hanso film is if there was an incident prior to the films creation in 1980. If there were two separate incidents, then why not three? The first incident could have brought about the demise of Station 1, forcing the activation of Station 2. A second incident then caused Station 2 to be abandoned, and work was moved to Station 3. Then a third incident occurred at Station 3, and work was moved to the next facility. It is possible that Stations 1 and 2 could still be operational to a certain extent, similar to the way that Station 3 is, but the main reason for moving operations from station to station is so that the bulk of the research is always conducted at a fully operational facility.

While trying to find a permanent solution for the failing EM field, an experiment involving the magnetic phenomenon on the island went awry causing the incident. Based on my interpretation of the map, the “Incident” which brought about the demise of Station 3 started in the C1 hatch, and spread to the central facility. Unfortunately, this hatch was destroyed in the “Incident” which is why it was scratched out on the map. In order prevent the “Incident” from spreading to the other hatches; the entire facility was put into lockdown. Once it was contained, the lockdown was disengaged. However, damage to the C1 hatch and the central facility rendered them unsafe. After the “Incident”, the corridors leading to the central facility were sealed off, as indicated on the map by the “X”s over the corridors, and the area quarantined.

Work originally conducted at Station 3 was moved to another facility, and the majority of DI resources that remained on the island were moved to a hatch, possible C3, to the north (which is the facility currently occupied by the Others). The one thing that could not be moved to the new facility to the north was the many computer systems (Which are in a part of the hatch that either the Flight 815 survivors have not found yet, or is in a room behind the concrete sealed corridor) in Station 3 that was used to monitor and process the information on the EM field. Since all systems seemed to be working normally, they decided to continue this operation in Station 3, and to leave one or two technicians there to maintain the cycle.

Desmond and the Hatch: Eventually, Kelvin becomes the technician assigned with the non-desirable job of entering the code. One day, Kelvin finds Desmond shipwrecked on the island, and lures him into Station 3 to take over his duty of entering the code. He promises Desmond that he will return to relieve him, but instead, leaves him alone in Station 3, and goes to the northern facility to pursue more interesting endeavors. Kelvin convinces his superiors to leave Desmond in the hatch, and that they could easily monitor him via the DIRV which they have already been using to monitor everything on the island. Desmond remains in the Hatch entering the code as directed until Jack, Kate and Locke find him.

The Other Projects: The Hanso Foundation site also mentions other areas of research such as, Quest for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, Cryogenics Development, and Juxtapositional Eugenics. Although the DI puts most of its efforts toward it’s EM field research, the other projects are studied for the purpose of either being a contingency plan, or as a way to augment and support the Initiative.

In the early stages of the DI, Hanso and Degroots realized that humans did not have the technology to even begin to comprehend the physics required to restore the EM field.
It was then that they resolved that one of their best chances to acquire the knowledge and technology for saving the planet was in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. It was the hope of this program was that if a solution could not be found on Earth; then perhaps an intelligent, more advanced civilization from off world would. It is possible that extra-terrestrial contact was made, and that they are currently working with the DI to find a solution to Earth’s failing EM field. Based on the technology available at the time of the Hanso film, humanity did not have the technology required to establish a complex network of satellites, which is currently stabilizing Earth’s EM field, and it was through the assistance of extra-terrestrial intelligence that this temporary solution was found and implemented. The search for further extra-terrestrial intelligence continues in the hope that contact can be made with a civilization that has the knowledge and means to fix Earth’s failing EM field.

The Cryogenics Development program was established as a contingency plan to be used in the event that a solution to the ailing EM field could not be found. If the EM field fails, then radiation from the sun would bombard the planet, making it completely uninhabitable. Without a means of faster than the speed of light travel, it would take several hundred years for humans to reach the nearest inhabitable planet. The most viable way to make such a trip would be to cryogenically freeze traveling colonists, and revive them shortly before arriving at their new home. However, the ingenuity of DI has found that the use of this technology proved to be a major breakthrough with their Accelerated Remote Viewing program. By putting the DIRV into suspended animation, they found that, since the brain is no longer preoccupied with bodily functions, a psychic’s aptitude increases exponentially giving them the ability to remote view events anywhere on the planet, and, with the assistance of multiple DIRVs, can even manipulate the surroundings and events that they are viewing. (i.e. Hurly’s new house catching on fire, or causing a plane to crash in a pre-designated place).

Eugenics is defined as a science that deals with the improvement (as by control of human mating) of hereditary qualities of a race or breed. Means of achieving such goals includes, but is not exclusive to: Prenatal testing and screening, genetic counseling, birth control, selective breeding, invetro fertilization, and genetic engineering. The DI’s research in this field serves as another contingency plan. In the event that humans should have to leave the planet two things must be done. A viable genetic diversity must be made available for the purpose of repopulation, and the people who are chosen to repopulate must be able to survive, not only the trip to their new home, but be able to survive whatever their new habitat may be. Like Cryogenics, Eugenics has proven to have other applications besides its use as a contingency plan. Under the auspices of their Eugenics program, the DI has in place an active breeding program with the objective of acquiring more powerful psychics.

In The End: It was shown in the season one finale, Exodus, that the Others had access to a boat. It is quite possible that there are other resources in the island that are available to them. It is obvious that the Others know enough if not everything about the island that they could leave the island whenever they wanted. Jack and the Survivors learn that the Others assist the DI scientists still on the island to find a permanent remedy for the ailing EM field. Finally, all the secrets of the island are revealed to them, and they now have both the opportunity and means to leave the island. Many of the survivors choose to leave the island, but, like the Others before them, Jack and a few others elect to stay on the island to help the Hanso scientists with their work.

Misc. Notes on the Map:
1. Cerberus is either the name of the project that the facility was working on, or the name of the Island’s security system, which, according to the notes, suffered a “catastrophic malfunction”.

2. The hatches are named (starting from the scratched out hatch at the 11 o’clock position) C1, Arrow, C3 (Meteorological study?), C4 (Possibly designated the “Pearl”), Swan, Flame, Staff (Medical Hatch).

3. The dashed lines used to draw the hatches could indicate that the person drawing the map either didn’t know their exact location, or that they were under construction at the time the map was drawn.

4. The “?” next to C1, C2, C3 could indicate that the person drawing the map didn’t know the names of those hatches. “C” could mean “Corridor”. Corridor 1, Corridor 2, Corridor 3, etc.

5. The hatches are connected to a central facility. After the “Incident”, the corridors leading to the central facility were sealed off as indicated on the map by the “X”s over the corridors.

6. The faint blue line connecting the different hatches, as indicated by the notes on the map, could be a subterranean conduit, which connects electronics, pipes, etc. throughout the facility. C4 (the Pearl?) does not have any faint blue lines (conduits) going to it which leads me to think that it could be an underwater hatch.

7. The squiggly blue lines could be lava tubes (it is a volcanic island after all), which according the notes, could make up the island’s “underground water table”, and are designated CV1-4. They could be used to feed water to the facility, or, because the notes refer to it as “Heavy Water”, used for experimentation.

8. The squiggly blue lines could also be under ground tunnels which could explain how the Others are able to get around on the island without being seen.

9. Based on near by the notes, the CVs could also indicate possible escape routes. The notes could be reasons the paths would not be desirable.

CVI = “CVI highly unlikely”
CVII = “Possible CVII inactive since incident”
CVIII = “Primary nexus of Cerebus related activity”, and “Sightings coincide with emergency shutdown of internet service because of heightened security”.
CVIV = “CVIV?”, and “High potential for R.V.S.” (Remote Viewing Scans?)

10. The person who drew the map may have hypothesized that C4 (the Pearl?) could not be the facility’s communication’s center when he noted that, “interference might also prevent location from use as listening station, cryptography, or analysis”.

11. If Cerebus refers to the island security system, then it is possible that the survivor camp is on the beach between the Swan and C4 hatch, which is where the mapmaker noted that that area was the “primary nexus of Cerebus related activity”.

12. Based on the notes, C3 is located in the mountains, and is used for the Dharma Initiative’s “weather project”. Because of this note, it can be assumed that the blue lines on the map do indicate that it is a geological map of the island, and that there is a hatch in the mountains.

13. The Others may be using the C3 hatch as a base for their operations.

Debunked: Here are aspects of my theory that have pretty much been definitively disproved through information revealed in new episodes.

The Crash: The Mythbusters, in Killer Brace Position (episode 2-26), experimented on whether or not assuming the tucked position would actually reduce the injury sustained, and even save you life in a plane crash. Not only did they prove that the tucked position reduces the amount of injuries you sustain in a crash, but also that a plane is designed in such a way that a majority of passengers do in fact survive the crash. People who survive the initial crash actually die from burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Basically, what kills them is that they are not able to get off of the plane. Since the plane broke into thirds before it crashed, any smoke from a fire could escape and not fill the cabin. The plane being broken into sections also allowed the survivors to exit the wreckage before fire or falling debris caused them further injury.

There was nothing that appeared in any of the episodes, said on the official podcast, or printed that rally debunked this theory. I am personally debunking this theory because I personally believe that it would be virtually impossible for anyone to survive a plane crash in which it breaks into three pieces before it hits the ground.

Adam, Eve and Henry Gale: One of the first mysteries that the survivors encountered on the island was who was the two courses in the cave whom Jack referred to as “Adam and Eve”. For a while, I never really bothered pondering their identities because in my opinion, there are far more interesting mysteries to speculate about on the island. However, after the introduction of Henry Gale and his story about his balloon in One of Them, I got the idea for the theory that, if he is lying, Adam and Eve may have come to the island on the balloon. With no hope of being rescued, they moved to the cave where they died (possibly from the sickness that Rousseau keeps talking about, but for some reason has yet to manifest among any of the survivors).

In one of my previous versions, I theorized about a connection between Henry Gale and Adam and Eve. However, after Ana-Lucia, Sayid, and Charlie’s discovery of the real Henry Gale’s grave, it appears that this theory is clearly blown out of the water. This does however brings up more questions than it answers. Assuming that the fake Henry is lying about finding the real Henry, who buried the real Henry? How did fake Henry know the name of real Henry’s wife? If real Henry was already dead when he found him, and it was established that he didn’t know about the contents of real Henry’s wallet until Sayid told him, how did fake Henry know real Henry’s name?

    Theory FAQ

Why do ships, planes, balloons and so forth keep being LOST on the island?

As for stuff crashing into the island, as I stated in my theory, flight 815 was brought to the island, but the other stuff, Rousseau’s ship, Desmond’s boat, the drug smuggler’s plane, and (if he’s telling the truth) Henry Gale’s balloon were caused to the crash by the DI to protect the secrecy of the island. It is safe to say, that the island is not charted on current navigational maps. This would explain why no planes or ships pass by. If it is not near regular shipping routes or flight paths, and if no one knows that it is there, then why bother sailing by, or flying over an area that, according to maps, is open Ocean? If a passing ship or plane were to come across the island, then the DI runs the risk of being discovered. The existence of the island would be reported and then before long, charted to be included on updated maps.

I think that the black smoke could be some type of remote viewing object, but I don’t think it’s a projection in ITSELF. If you could choose your method of projection, I doubt it would be a column of black smoke; you’d probably opt for something normal like a bird or at least something less conspicuous and frightening. If you’re trying to brain scan people the last thing you want them to do is freak out and run off.

My thinking about the black smoke is that they don’t have a choice of the form that they assume while viewing. When they are viewing they assume the form of the black smoke. Another thing that I tried to take into account while writing this theory was the “Little Suzy” factor. Notice that in different sections of my theory, Walt has different abilities, but cannot use them all at once. In Fan Fiction, this is called the “Little Suzy” effect (Don’t ask me why its called that because I have no idea). When creating a character, you can’t give them omnipotent abilities. It is more believable if the a character has drawbacks and weaknesses to their abilities. If he is viewing, then he can’t talk or have physical form. If he is projecting a physical form, then he can’t talk or interact. If he is talking (Like when he was sending a message to Michael on the computer or in the case of the DIRVs when they are whispering to each other), he does not spectrally manifest as a cloud. If the DIRV’s are going to try to manipulate events or surroundings, then there has to be more than one of them to do so. Basically, I’ve taken away the DIRVs ability to be completely undetectable while viewing, and from being all-powerful.

The only thing that tugs at me is the show spends a considerable amount of effort to disclose the nefarious past of the survivors. The flashbacks reveal some real gray areas between good and evil. The other dichotomy in place is faith vs. science. Several religious images and undertones are placed throughout the series. Where would these themes lie within your EM theory or do you consider them to be a red herring or way to pass the hour as the creators slowly lead us down this path of revelation?

When writing this theory I was working on the plausible science of the island and not the philosophy. The constant theme of black and white, and good vs. evil has proven to be contradictory to almost everything in the show. As we have seen in the many flashbacks, life is not one or the other, but shades of gray. That is why the Yin & Yang symbol which constantly reappears, is a good reflection of the show. No one is all good, and no one is all evil. The nefarious past of the survivors reflects upon the dichotomy of the DI. The DI is working to save the world, however, in order to achieve that goal, they are willing to cross the line between right and wrong for the greater good of all of humanity…

Or, it all could just be filler. Hehe Unlike plot driven shows like Law & Order, the characters on Lost are just as important to the success of the show as the plot. A lot of people tune in every week to see the plot develop, but just as many people tune in to watch the characters as well.

Hurley didn’t choose the numbers by coincidence… he heard them from Lenny.

Even though I never mentioned it, I knew that Hurly got the numbers from Lenny. I just figured that everyone knew where Hurly got the numbers so I didn’t bother to mention it in my theory. What I said in my theory was that the numbers being the winning lottery numbers was a coincidence. Hurly using the numbers on his lottery ticket was not a major disruption to the DIRVs, but it was when Hurly won with the numbers that it started disrupt them. The media coverage of Hurly was huge. So much so that, as shown in House of the Raising Sun, it was even broadcasted in Korea. Because of Hurly, the numbers were now being broadcasted all over the world. Every time that the story was broadcasted somewhere the numbers were also broadcasted. This no doubt wreaked havoc on the DIRVs trying to home in on the island.

Astral projection is when you project your consciousness into an astral double of your body in the astral plane of existence. People would not be able to see you unless they where also an astral projection, or practicing clairvoyant sight, which when Walt was sited no one was.

Although I admit that I know nothing about Astral Projection. I’m not the first person to take liberties on the concept of Astral Projection. While I’m sure that you idea of astral projection is closer to what it really is if there was such a thing, my limited knowledge of astral projection is based on what I have seen on television and in movies.

In the series Charmed (I forget what the character’s name was, but it was Shannon Doherty’s character), one of the characters had the ability to astral project, and her astral self could be seen by other characters, talk, and even interact with her surroundings. I thought that since astral projection was portrayed in this way before, that the audience (Charmed fans in particular) would already be familiar with the concept.

As far as I am concerned, Astral Projection has not been proven to exist, and until it is, there is no definitive definition for it. However, since there is no definitive way to know which idea of astral projection is correct, how about we just say that you and the creators of Charmed are both right.

I am curious though how you would explain the Black Rock…no one really has any thoughts to something that is obviously important somehow to the show, since it was in 2 or 3 episodes. The ships seems to throw a lot of theories “off-course”, no pun intended, as it seems to throw an element of time warping into the mix.

I have yet to read a viable theory on the Black Rock. The problem with the Black Rock is that it’s hard to explain without entering the realm of wormholes, dimensional shifts, Bermuda triangles, or South Pacific decahedrons. Personally, I think that there is enough going on in the show plot wise, that throwing wormholes into the mix would be like turning on a full blender with out the lid on… One Big Mess.

The children and random ‘athletic guys’ were the only kidnapped (Claire was carrying a child, and Charlie was just ‘there’, and no one knows what happened to the south African chick with the tailies), characters who don’t even have names and aren’t even semi-main characters. If the passengers were manipulated to be on that flight, why not bring a plane full of psychic children and athletic fathers to the island?

Everyone assumes that just because they never had any names in the show that they weren’t important. When they explained that they took the strongest, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they were taking them for the sake of making it easier to take out the weaker survivors nor does it mean that they meant physically strong. When the “Strongest” were taken, they may have been taken for use in the DI’s Eugenics program. As for the kids, bringing them to the island while they are young, would give the DI the opportunity to cultivate their abilities to the fullest, whether that be psychic abilities, or just a loyal grunt. The reason that planeloads of children are not brought to the island is because the island has limited resources, and would not be able to sustain a large population of psychic children. Could you imagine the havoc a few hundred children with psychic abilities would wreak on the island? It makes sense to bring in only a few at a time so that they can be easily managed.

So do you think the 2 guys Hurley se’s at the metal hospital are possible DIRVs? Or was their purpose to simply press the numbers to focus the DIRVs.

I do think that they are DIRVs. It is possible that the mental strain that the brain undergoes is immense. I believe that psychics are a fairly recent phenomenon in human evolution. As such, the human brain has not evolved to a point where it can sustain prolonged use of this ability. DIRVs, as a result, run the risk of literally burning out. With such a high turn over of psychics, the DI expanded their research in their contingency projects (Cryogenics, and Eugenics) as a means of reducing the mental stress, and increasing the longevity of the DIRVs.

CVI = “CVI highly unlikely”
